Referral Policy For Doctors To Be Launch In Bihar

Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, the current Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, has launched Referral policy in Bihar. As per this policy, the doctor will have to tell the concrete reason before referring the patient.

This policy will be beneficial for the patients as well as the doctors as their patients are going to get a proper treatment on time and the doctors will get patients on time to treat well, vice versa. This Policy is implemented in Bihar, as the doctors will not be able to refer patients to superior hospitals without any accurate and valid reason.

What is Referral Policy?

This Referral Policy says that:

  • The doctors have to work accordingly with standards that are being set for each disease telling what kind of patients are going to be referred to the superior hospitals and what patients are going to take treatment in lower minor hospitals.
  • Together with this on the referral page doctors have to mention everything related to the patient’s condition, the disease, what tests have already taken place, date of admitting the patient and finally, the reason for the Referral. If the Doctor misses any of these above-mentioned mandatory details, and the referral by him is needless, then the doctor may be discharged from his service as a doctor.

Why Referral Policy was Required?

  • This policy was required on the priority basis, as the doctors from Bihar were just admitting the patient and getting rid of their job by referring them to another big hospital just by writing a referral on the slip.
  • Due to this lack of responsibility, patients were dying as they were not getting required treatment on time or reaching a condition where the treatment becomes more crucial and costly.(These people prefer government hospitals as they cannot afford the treatment at big private hospitals)
  • When Tejashwi Yadav, the current Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, came to know about this he took a strict action and applied this referral policy in Bihar to rectify this ‘referring habit’, without any valid reason, of the doctors there.

Benefit if Referral Policy in Hospital

  • Referring the patient is basically a written slip from the initial doctor to visit a specialist for the specifically required medical service. It is the requirement of companies providing health insurances to the patients to ensure if they are getting treatment from the relevant specialist for any certain disease.
  • A highly beneficial policy as there should be more efficient and effective communication between primary care providers, experts, and other healthcare workers involved in a patient's treatment.
  • This is a structured approach to serve patients to utilize the services and resources. This is an approach to improve self-care, wellness, and the standard of care in the society.
