Delhi Police files FIR against TMC MP Mahua Moitra

Mahua Moitra has been locked in, as per Suman Nalwa (DCP) under section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), which has replaced the Indian Penal Code and works against the behavior or action to offend a woman's modesty. Mohua Moitra asked the Delhi police to take action against the “Serial Offender” targeting Sharma.

Mahua Moitra News Latest 2024

On 7th July 2024, the Delhi Police IFSO (Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations) unit filed an FIR against Mahua Moitra, Trinamool Congress Leader and Krishnanagar MP for her “Coarse” comment against Rekha Sharma, the NCW (National Commission for Women) Chief. 

The former has been charged under section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) which works against the behavior or action to offend a woman's modesty. In a video posted on the 4th of July, Moitra, the MP from Krishnanagar of West Bengal, commented. 

In this video, Sharma, the NCW chief, is shown arriving at the site of a stampede recently in Hathras of Uttar Pradesh. Moitra commented on this video and said:

“She is too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas.”

Beforehand, the National Commission for Women (NCW) had taken this initiative and sought attention to Moitra’s comment. They demanded an FIR against her for this remark. The post also showed a man walking behind Sharma and holding the umbrella. The NCW mentioned:

“An FIR should be registered against Moitra and a detailed action report should be communicated to the Commission within 3 days,” 

Further Added:

“… the crude remarks made by Moitra, are extremely outrageous and a sheer violation of a woman’s right to live with dignity.”

Mahua Moitra responded to this NCW’s post and stated:

“Come on Delhi Police please take action immediately on suo motu orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella .”

Sharma also wrote to Om Birla, the Lok Sabha Speaker, and requested him to take an  "appropriate action" against Moitra.

Who is Mahua Moitra?

Mahua Moitra, born on 12th October 1974, is an Indian politician who is currently in the news due to her comment on the NCW chief Rekha Sharma. Moitra, MP from Krishnanagar, West Bengal was expelled from the Lok Sabha for “Cash-For-Query” charges in 2023 and was re-elected in 2024. She was also accused of taking bribes and luxury gifts from Darshan Hiranandani, a Businessman.

She wrote a comment in reaction to videos of the Women’s Commission Chief meeting women, injured in the Hathras Stampede. In this, a total of 121 people were killed. 

Mohua Moitra Reaction to Rekha Sharma's FIR 

After she tagged the Delhi police and asked them to arrest her, Moitra posted earlier tweets by Rekha Sharma in which Sharma called Lalu Yadav RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) Chief & Sonia Gandhi (Former Congress President) DUMB and also made a joke against Arvind Kejriwal (Delhi’s Chief Minister) with a “Suhaad Raat” reference. Mohua Moitra asked the Delhi police to take action against the “Serial Offender” targeting Sharma. Moitra stated:

"Also Delhi Police, while you're at it, can you please register an FIR against another serial offender under your new Act."

Delhi BJP Unit Meeting in JLN Stadium

On 7th July (Sunday), the Delhi BJP unit held an executive committee meeting at the Jawahar Lal Nehru (JLN) Stadium. Workers were congratulated for winning all seven Lok Sabha seats in the recent polls in Delhi. The unit asked them to support and make sure BJP's Victory in the Assembly Elections of next year. 

Piyush Goyal, the Union Minister inaugurated this event and Virendra Sachdeva, Delhi BJP President, chaired it. Manish Sisodia, the former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, also received permission from the court to release funds for development projects in the Patparganj assembly constituency.
