He played his last T20I match on 29th June 2024 against South Africa. He played the last crucial over in his last match. He achieved the first rank in the ICC All-rounder list after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and became the first Indian to achieve this position.

A BCCI source shared:

"Hardik Pandya is all set to lead the Indian team in the T20, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement. Hardik is also unlikely to be rested for the upcoming series vs Sri Lanka." 

The source further added:

"KL Rahul will lead the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma as the board believes he makes runs in the longer format."

When did Rohit Sharma announce his Retirement?

Rohit Sharma said that he would continue to play for India in the Test and ODI formats but he will not play any game under T20I format. He announced his retirement while giving the post-interview after the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup 2024 final match. 

Sharma stated:

"No better time to say goodbye, this was my last game as well. I've enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. I've loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted - I wanted to win the cup." 

He further added:

"I was not in the mood to retire from T20Is. But the situation has arisen, that I thought, this is the perfect situation for me, and nothing better than winning the cup and saying goodbye.”

Hardik Pandya’s Comeback as Captain After IPL 2024?

Hardik Pandya was chosen as the Captain of the Mumbai Indians franchise in 2024. The team didn’t perform well this season and ended the tournament by being in the last position in the points table. The MI fans started blaming Pandya for that. 

After celebrating the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup 2024 win over South Africa in Barbados, Pandya shared a video from the celebrations and wrote:
