Who is Champai Soren in Jharkhand?
Champai Soren, born on 1st November 1956, is an Indian politician. He served the term as the 7th Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2nd February to 3rd July 2024. He was opted as CM after the former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, was arrested by the ED (Enforcement Directorate) over the allegations of Money Laundering.
His brief term as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister ended on 3rd July with Hemant Soren again resuming as the CM after his release from jail. Champai is a tribal leader with a lengthy political career. He implemented many Welfare schemes during his term as a CM in Jharkhand.
Champai gave his resignation on 2nd July (Tuesday). Hemant was once again opted as a leader by the JMM party on the same date and he submitted the request to form the government to the governor. INDIA bloc allies of JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) in the state – the Congress and the RJD ( Rashtriya Janata Dal) – have supported the decision.
Hemant Soren took oath as a CM on 4th July at 05:00 pm after the resignation of Champai Soren. On the same day, the former also took the oath as Jharkhand’s CM after C.P. Radhakrishnan, the Governor, invited him to form the government in the state (Jharkhand).
Who is Hemant Soren in Jharkhand?
Hemant Soren, born on 10th August 1975, is an Indian politician. He served as the 5th Chief Minister of Jharkhand from 2019 to 2024 & 2013 to 2014. He once again took the oath as a CM on 4th July in the evening after his release from jail on June 28th.
He also serves as the current president of the JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha). It is a political party in Jharkhand. On 31st January 2024, he was arrested by the ED (Enforcement Directorate)in a land scam case.
Why did Hemant Soren again take the position of CM of Jharkhand?
Reports say that Hemant was not ready to return as a CM of Jharkhand, but, the image of Champai Soren was declined due to some allegations regarding his government. In November-December 2024, the elections to the 81-member Jharkhand Legislative Assembly are scheduled. The JMM didn’t want to take the risk during the upcoming elections that’s why Hemant took over the position of CM.
All INDIA bloc partners in the coalition government from the Congress and RJD also backed Hemant. They believe that JMM won the 2019 assembly elections under Hemant’s leadership and they again want to fetch the same results in favor of the party. The MLAs convinced Chmpai to resign.
The JMM party also dismissed - Bishunpur MLA Chamra Linda and Boriyo MLA Lobin Hembrom from the party.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the BJP’s Jharkhand co-in-charge and Assam CM stated:
“The removal of a senior tribal leader from the post of Chief Minister by the JMM and the Congress is deeply distressing.”
Hemant Soren took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of the Jharkhand state in India on 4th, July (Thursday). Champai Soren, outside Raj Bhawan, told media persons:
“Our alliance decided to elect Hemant Babu (Hemant Soren) as leader. I’ve resigned from my post on my own.”
Irfan Ansari, the Congress MLA, stated:
“A decision was taken at the meeting that Hemant Soren will be the Chief Minister of the State again.”
A JMM leader mentioned:
“The alliance partner legislators and leaders elected Hemant Soren for the third term of CM for a unified command ahead of the upcoming State elections in October this year.”
Vinay Singh, BJP spokesperson, said:
“It is clear that once a dynast, always a dynast. The momentary transition of power to Champai Soren was nothing but a façade created to look democratic. However, they (the Shibu Soren family) will never let power go outside the family.”
