The women's Sri Lankan team won their first Asia Cup after defeating India on 28th July (Sunday). In this match, Chamari Athapaththu scored 61 and Harshitha Samarawickrama scored 69 runs which created a hurdle for the Indian team who were unable to defeat Sri Lanka. This final match win brought the first ever Women’s Asia Cup title to the Women's Sri Lankan cricket team history.

Sri Lanka Won Women’s Asia Cup 2024

In 2024, the Women’s Sri Lankan team won their first-ever Women’s Asia Cup 2024 title on 28th July (Sunday). Sri Lanka beat India by 8 wickets in this final match and snatched the title. 

The women’s Indian team reached the finals 9 times in history and this was only the second time that they failed to win the title. Previously, they lost the final game by 3 wickets against Bangladesh in the Women’s Asia Cup 2018.

Harshitha Samarawickrama became the player of the match in the final game and Chamari Athapaththu became the player of the tournament as she made 304 runs and took 3 wickets in the event.

First Innings of the Match

At the start of the match, Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s captain, won the toss. She opted to bat first in this final game. The start of the match was positive for the Indian side but the Sri Lankan team took over in the middle of the game. 

Shafali Varma, Uma Chetry, and Harmanpreet Kaur’s wickets were taken early by the Sri Lankan team after they had only scored 16, 9, & 11 runs, respectively. On the Indian side, the contributions from Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Richa Ghosh were appreciable as they scored 60, 29, & 30, respectively, and supported the team to make 165/6 by the end of the first innings. 

Second Innings of the Match

The start of the second innings was not in favor of the Sri Lankan team as Vishmi Gunaaraatne was out after making just one run. Chamari Athapaththu and Harshita Samarawickrama took the flow of the game while favoring their team and scored 61 and 69 runs, respectively. 

In the first five overs, Sri Lanka only scored 28 runs, and later in the 6th over they made 16 runs. Sri Lanka followed the targeted score at a steady pace. Chamari Athapaththu lost her wicket in the 12th over after making 61 runs in 43 balls. 

After her wicket, Harshita Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari finished the game in the 9th over after scoring 69 runs from 51 balls and 30 runs from 16 balls, respectively.
