It is named after Talkatora Gardens, a Mughal-era garden. A tal (tank) on the garden's west side is surrounded by hilly ground (part of the Delhi ridge creates a katora, a bowl-shaped natural depression), which lends the location its name.

On February 25, 2010, the upgraded Talkatora Indoor Stadium was dedicated. The stadium is a one-of-a-kind architectural element with an attractive appearance.
