Both of these cricketers belong to the same state, Delhi. They have played Ranji Trophy Together for this state.  An unprofessional argument between the two took place during a match between RCB and KKR in IPL 2023 edition.

• In the tenth over, Kohli misjudged a catch to sweeper cover, causing Gambhir and the other players to gather in the middle. 
• After the two had exchanged words, Gambhir noticed emerging from his group and going towards Kohli, who had stood his position at short cover instead of walking off.
• Even when teammates and umpires accompanied him to defuse the tense situation, it was Rajat Bhatia, another Delhi player, who rushed into the action to prevent the possibility of a fight.

Although they both have argued before as well in IPL 2013, this argument between Kohli and Gambhir has become the biggest controversy of IPL 2023. Let's preview what exactly happened on the field on May 1st, 2023 in a match between RCB and LSG . 

• Gambhir appeared much more furious after Kohli's conversation with Kyle Mayers of LSG.

Kohli & Mayers were walking beside each other post match. Mayers asked Kohli “Why are you constantly abusing?”

Virat asked in return, “Why are you staring at me?”

Prior to this, Amit Mishra has complained to the umpire about Virat’s continuously abusing Naveen-Ul-Haq, number 10 player.

Gautam Gambhir sensed all these things could turn ugly, pulled Mayers and requested him not to fall in any kind of conversation when Kohli made a comment. The argument that followed seemed a little childish as per any of their co-player present there.

‘Kya bol raha hai bol’ (What are you saying, come again?)

 Virat replied:

'Maine aapko kuch bola hi naahin, aap kyon ghus rahe ho’ (Why are you interrupting in between when I haven’t said anything to you.)

 'Tuney agar mere player ko bola hai, matlab tune meri family ko gaali diya hai. (You abused my player and that's like abusing my family to me.) 

Virat again replied:

'Toh aap apne family ko sambhal ke rakhiye'. (Then you take care of your family).

 Gautam’s final response line to Virat was: 'Toh ab tu mujhe sikhayega...' (So now I have to learn from you...).

 All the eyewitnesses felt that it was childish from both sides.

An Indian former player, who shared the dressing room with both Virat and Gautam, stated:

"It is a bit of a complicated relationship between the two. Gautam is not a bad human being but not the easiest person to handle. He had no business to gesture that finger on lips to the crowd at Chinnaswamy, which swears by Virat's name.

"Now here, Virat got a chance to show one upmanship, and he did. He knows that Gautam has been a staunch critic of his captaincy and even he won't take a step back," 

As Kohli said in a RCB video, "You gotta take it, otherwise don't give it."

As a result of their breaking of the IPL Code of Conduct, both received 100% of their match money as fines on Tuesday, May 2nd. Naveen, on the other hand, was given a penalty or punishment charge equal to 50% of his match fees.
