What does Verified Blue Tick (Check mark) Means on Twitter

The blue checkmark on Twitter is a symbol that indicates an account has met the eligibility criteria set by the social networking platform and has an active subscription to Twitter Blue.

  • This verification process is intended to authenticate the identity of the account holder and distinguish them from impersonators or fake accounts.
  • To be eligible for verification, an account must have been active for at least 90 days and have a verified phone number associated with the account. In addition, the account holder must maintain an active and eligible subscription to Twitter Blue.

Once verified, the account holder will receive a blue checkmark next to their username, indicating their authenticity to other Twitter users.

Eligibility for Verified Blue Tick (Check mark) on Twitter

To maintain the integrity of the platform, Twitter has established an eligibility criteria that an account must meet in order to receive or retain the blue checkmark.

  • The criteria includes ensuring the completeness of the account by having a display name and profile photo. The account must also be actively used within the past 30 days and must have a confirmed phone number to confirm its security.
  • In addition, to qualify for the blue checkmark, the account must not exhibit any recent changes to its profile photo, display name, or username (@handle).

It must also not show any signs of being misleading or deceptive and engaging in platform manipulation and spam. These criteria are in place to ensure that only genuine and authentic accounts are verified, promoting trust and transparency among Twitter users.

Note :-

After reviewing a Twitter Blue subscribed account to ensure it meets the eligibility criteria, the Twitter team will award the blue checkmark to the account if it qualifies.

It's worth noting that Twitter has discontinued the previous verification application process based on the criteria of being active, notable, and authentic.

As a result, users can no longer apply for the blue checkmark using this method. Instead, users are required to subscribe to Twitter Blue and meet the new eligibility requirements to obtain verification.

Disappearance and Temporary loss of Verified Blue tick on Twitter

As outlined in the Twitter Terms of Service, including their Purchaser terms, Twitter reserves the right to remove the blue checkmark from an account at any time without notice. This is done to promote platform integrity and minimize confusion.

If an account holder makes changes to their display name, profile photo, or username (@handle), their blue checkmark may be temporarily removed until the account is re-validated to ensure it still meets the eligibility criteria. During this review period, no further changes to the profile photo, display name, or username will be permitted.

If an account is found to be in violation of the Twitter Rules, the blue checkmark may also be removed. This can occur due to any breach of the Twitter Terms of Service or manipulation of Twitter processes. In some cases, suspension may also be imposed.

Why Elon Musk Introduce Paid Blue Tick on Twitter

Under the pressure from Twitter, Musk proceeded with the acquisition of the blue checkmark for his account.

However, he maintained his stance that bots were a significant issue on the platform and argued that paid verification was the best solution. In a Twitter thread dated 1 November, he proposed that giving priority in replies, mentions, and search results to verified accounts that had been paid for was crucial (to combat spam and scams).

The underlying assumption here was that a bot account would not pay for the verification tick, thereby making it less prominent on the platform.
