The Purple Cap is an award given to the leading wicket-taker in the Indian Premier League (IPL) each season. It is named after its purple-colored cap with a golden star on it, which the leading wicket-taker wears while on the field during the matches. The Purple Cap was introduced in the IPL in 2008, and since then, it has been awarded every season. The cap is awarded to the bowler who takes the highest number of wickets throughout the tournament, including the playoffs. If two or more bowlers have the same number of wickets, the Purple Cap is awarded to the bowler with a better economy rate.

It adds an extra incentive for bowlers to perform at their best and take as many wickets as possible during the season.
