Morne Morkel is glad to be appointed as the new Indian bowling coach for the men’s cricket team. He spoke about his heart feelings that he exchanged with his father. He also expressed his thoughts about his selection on this important role in the team. 

Morne Morkel had an amazing 12-year long career with the South African team from 2006-2018. During this time, he played 47 International matches across different cricket formats and took 544 wickets. This new Indian bowling coach joined the team in Chennai when they were preparing for their 1st test game against the Bangladesh team.

Morne Morkel’s first job responsibility with the Indian cricket team as a bowling coach would be the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh. This series will commence on 19th September (Thursday) in Chennai, India. 

The upcoming test games between India and Bangladesh are going to be important. Both of them have won their last series and winning these matches would be important for both. The Indian side is at the top and the Bangladesh side is at number 4. 

Who was the Indian bowling Coach Before Morkel?

Morne Morkel replaced Paras Mhambrey and Sairaj Bahutule from the position of Indian Cricket team bowling coach. Paras Mhambrey was a part of the support staff under Rahul Dravid’s leadership. Sairaj Bhautule took the position as an interim coach after Gautam Gambhir’s coaching tenure commenced.

How did Morkel React on His Selection as an Indian Bowling Coach?

Morkel was pleased with this selection as he mentioned in a video posted:

“When I ended the call, I sat for about five minutes in the room reflecting on it and then I first phoned my dad,” 

He further added:

“I didn't even go to my wife. You know, normally they say go to your wife first, but I spoke to my dad and I mean, being a cricket fan for years and knowing what was going to come up, this is quite a special moment for me.”

He shared the moment with his family and stated:

“I enjoyed it for about 5 to 7 minutes to myself and then obviously shared with the family that this is an opportunity and potentially that might happen. I'm just so delighted that we eventually got things over the line, and I'm here.” 

What did Morkel say about Connecting with the Team?

Morne Morkel has played with the Indian players during the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament and he is glad to get this chance to make new friends and cricket connections. While stating about his role as the new Indian bowling coach, Morkel shared about his views in making strong relations with the team. He mentioned:

“It is just important to connect well with the guys. I've played a lot against some of the players. I've seen and connected a little bit to some of the guys playing in the IPL and to now be in a camp, and to form friendships and to form relationships for me is very important.”

The selection of Morkel, a new Indian bowling coach, will allow him to reconnect with his Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR’s) team mate, Gautam Gambhir. They have played 3 IPL editions together. They have worked together before in the coaching team of Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) in 2022 and 2023 IPL editions. This reunion may benefit the Indian cricket team and make them stronger. 

What was Morne Morkel Doing Before This?

Before joining the Indian coaching staff as the bowling coach, Morkel was working with Pakistan during the ODI World Cup 2023 and Babar Azam, Pakistan’s skipper. He left the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) after a short span.
