Mahendra Singh Dhoni Biography

Mahendra Singh Dhoni Biography

M.S. Dhoni, in full Mahendra Singh Dhoni, (born July 7, 1981, Jharkhand state, India), Indian cricketer whose rise to popularity in the early 21st century culminated in his captaincy of the Indian national side that won the one-day Cricket World Cup in 2011.

In 2004, Dhoni made his international debut. In his fifth international match, his batsmanship came through in a 148-run performance against Pakistan. He made the India Test team within a year, rapidly establishing himself with a century (100 or more runs in a single inning) against Pakistan.

Despite his lack of experience, Dhoni took over as captain of India's one-day team in 2007 and guided them to the Twenty20 (T20) worldwide title. In December 2009, series victories against Australia and Sri Lanka, among others, brought India to the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings for the first time. In 2008 and 2009, Dhoni received the ICC One Day International Player of the Year Award for his performance. Dhoni's 91-run innings in front of a home crowd in Mumbai in the 2011 one-day World Cup set the way for India's win over Sri Lanka in the final.

The expansion of T20 cricket in the Indian subcontinent opened the stage for the establishment of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. Dhoni signed with the Chennai Super Kings for $1.5 million in the league's first season, which was the highest contract in the IPL at the time. He later guided the team to two straight championships (2010, 2011). In 2016, the IRL suspended the Super Kings franchise for two seasons for its role in a match-fixing controversy, and Dhoni then joined the Rising Pune Supergiant. He returned to the Chennai Super Kings in 2018, and the squad won the IPL championship that year and again in 2021.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni Cricket Career

With the exception of Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni is possibly India's most popular and certainly the most watched cricketer. He came from the cricketing backwaters of Jharkhand, with home-made batting and wicketkeeping skill, and a captaincy style that straddles the highs and lows of both conservatism and unorthodoxy. India has won the top award in all formats under Dhoni's captaincy, including the Test rankings for 18 months beginning in December 2009, the 50-over World Cup in 2011, and the World T20 on his captaincy debut in 2007.

Dhoni, then a ticket inspector with the Indian Railways, had escaped all notice except the odd word among Kolkata club cricket fans until he was 23 when he smashed two centuries for India A in a triangular 50-over competition in Nairobi. Long-haired and bold, he swaggered his way into international cricket, becoming an instant crowd favorite with ODI innings of 148 and 183 within a year of his debut.

Dhoni exemplified everything that was right with the new middle-class India. He didn't respect people's reputations, but he never degraded them either. He improvised and learned, but he never apologized for his unorthodox batting style. He developed into a multi-faceted ODI batsman, one who could amass, rebuild, and still hit those massive sixes.
