Telegram ‘New Features’ and Other Changes 2024

Pavel Valeryevich Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, a cloud-based, cross-platform, social media, and instant messaging service, was arrested on 24th August 2024 (Saturday) in Paris due to the allegations.

As per Durov, this feature "was used by less than 0.1 percent of Telegram users, but had issues with bots and scammers."

While replacing this feature, the app may include a “Business Nearby” feature to show the legal businesses. App’s CEO and co-founder, Pavel Durov announced the new feature introduction and changes in the app after he was released from the French Prison.

Mentioning that the 10 million paid subscribers are the users of Telegram Premium, Durov said in a post on his official Telegram channel:

“Today, we’re introducing new features while phasing out a few outdated ones.”

What were the violations against Telegram?

Pavel Durov was arrested in France for a judicial inquiry that opened last month including 12 alleged criminal violations as per the Paris Prosecutors. It is believed that the violations involved the selling of children's sexual material and drug trafficking, promoting organized criminal material transactions, and denying to share the details and documents with the investigators when asked lawfully. 

What did Pavel Durov Say on these current issues with the Telegram app?

The French authorities captured Pavel, the Telegram CEO, and charged him with allowing illicit content on this cloud-based, cross-platform, social media App. 

After Pavel was released from jail, he blamed the sudden growth in the user count of the Telegram platform that provided access to the criminals to involved in illegal activities.

He also denied the allegations that the messaging app refused to cooperate with the European authorities to limit these illegal activities. 

He stated that the number of users increased to 950 Million which “caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform.”

Moderation in the Telegram App

The company decided to restrict illicit activities and is all set to introduce ‘moderation’ in the messaging app. The recent post of the Telegram CEO stated:

“We’ve removed the People Nearby feature, which was used by less than 0.1% of Telegram users, but had issues with bots and scammers."

He also confirmed that the app will introduce a “Business Nearby” feature in the app. Using this feature, the users will be able to allow the current users to find legal and verified businesses around. It would be a useful attribute for the app in 2024. His post states:

“These businesses will be able to display product catalogs and accept payments seamlessly.”

He also updated that the users may not be able to upload the images or videos anymore on the Telegraph (Telegram’s only Blogging Tool). Pavel stated that it “seems to have been misused by anonymous actors.”

As per Pavel Durov, the telegram CEO and Co-Founder, 99.999% of users are not associated with any kind of illegal activities. A basic 0.001% of users have created a “bad image for the entire platform.”

He mentioned that the fresh changing  measures to be introduced this year are going to transform “Telegram from an area of criticism into one of praise.”
