Rohit Sharma’s Retirement from the T20I World Cup

Rohit Sharma is the finest Indian top-order batter and Indian skipper of the national team. He played international matches for the Indian team in different formats. He recently announced his retirement from the T20I format on 29th June 2024 after the game against South Africa. He debuted in the T20I format on 19 September 2007 in a match against England.

Rohit Sharma has played 159 T20I matches throughout his career and scored a total of 4231 runs. His average was 32.05 with a strike rate of 140.89. He is the highest scorer in the T20I format.

Rohit Sharma’s Retirement Announcement

Rohit Sharma said that he would continue to play for India in the Test and ODI formats but he will not play any game under T20I format. He announced his retirement following Virat’s announcement of his retirement from T20I format. He stated:

"No better time to say goodbye,"

He added:

"This was my last game as well. I've enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. I've loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted - I wanted to win the cup." 

He initially planned to continue playing for the T20I format in cricket. He mentioned:

"I was not in the mood to retire from T20Is. But the situation has arisen, that I thought, this is the perfect situation for me and nothing better than winning the cup and saying goodbye.”

Along with the Indian captain, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja also took retirement from the T20I format. These retirements were not surprising as each of the players taking retirement has spent more than a decade representing the nation in the international cricket formats. 

As they have won the ICC T20I Men’s World Cup 2024 match against South Africa and are the title winners of this year, it was the right time for them to leave this shortest cricket format. Their retirement will give space to the younger players to take over the responsibility in the Indian national cricket team.
