Indian Team Wore Black Bands in T20 World Cup 2024

In the 3rd match of the Super 8 stage of the T20 Men’s World Cup 2024, Team India wore black armbands in Barbados against Afghanistan on 20th June 2024 (Thursday). They did this to pay tribute to former Indian Cricket Player David Johnson. He passed away at 52 after falling from his balcony on the morning of 20th June 2024 (Thursday). The team was observed wearing the armbands during the national anthem before their match. 

The BCCI informed about the tribute from the Indian National team to Johnson by wearing a black armband on social media and stated:

"Team India will wear black armbands today in memory of former India fast bowler David Johnson, who passed away on Thursday."

David Johnson Cricketer Death 2024

The loss of David Johnson was shocking for all as his death wasn’t natural. The police called it a suicide whereas the family members of Johnson are calling it an accidental death. Some former players also expressed their grief for David Johnson on the day of his death using their social media handles.

Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian former cricketer, stated:

“Deeply saddened by the passing of my former teammate, David Johnson. He was full of life and never gave up on the field. My thoughts are with his friends and family.” 

Gautam Gambhir, former Indian cricketer, philanthropist and politician, stated:

“Saddened by the passing away of David Johnson. May god give strength to his family and loved ones.” 

Anil Kumble, former Indian cricketer, commentator and coach, stated:

“Saddened to hear the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon “ Benny”!”

Jay Shah, Indian Businessman and Cricket Administrator,  stated:

“Deepest condolences to the family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contributions to the game will always be remembered.” 

Who is David Johnson in India?

David Johnson, born on 16th October 1971, was an Indian Right-Arm Fast-Medium Bowler. He represented Karnataka in the domestic cricket and played Test matches for India. Even after his retirement, he was connected with sports as a mentor and coach. 

He died recently on 20th June 2024 (Thursday) at the age of 52 after falling from his balcony. He was residing with his family in a 5-floor apartment in Kanakashree Layout with his wife and children. 

David Johnson Cricketer Death Reason

The family of David Johnson is calling it an accidental death but the police are still suspecting it as a suicide case. Johnson fell from the balcony at around 11:30 am as per a senior police officer. The officer said that he fell from the balcony after Johnson informed his wife, Ilya that he needed to talk with the building security guard. 

Laxmi Prasad, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, stated: 

“Johnson fell to his death from the fourth-floor balcony. A case of unnatural death has been registered, and the investigation is ongoing from all possible angles.”

Dammar Shahi, the apartment security guard, reported that he found Johnson in the pool of blood and immediately informed Ilya about this. Johnson was declared dead on the way to hospital as he had several major head injuries. 

An officer stated:

“It appears Johnson may have jumped, but we are considering the possibility of an accidental fall. The balcony’s side wall and grill are around four feet high.” 

• No “Suicide note” was found by police.
• He was struggling with alcoholism and spent time in rehabilitation.
• He was depressed due to his health. 

All this shows that he may attempted suicide. The police are examining his mobile phone.
