The (WPL), often called the Tata Women's Premier League due to sponsorship, is an upcoming Indian women's Twenty20 cricket franchise competition. The Cricket Board of Control in India owns and operates it (BCCI). The first season, which will feature five franchises, will take place in March 2023 in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
The Women's T20 Challenge was India's first significant women's Twenty20 competition. This began as a single-match tournament in 2018, but has since grown to a three-team, three-match tournament staged in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
In February 2022, BCCI Chairman Sourav Ganguly revealed plans to launch a women's version of the IPL, India's premier men's Twenty20 competition, to replace the Women's T20 Challenge. Plans had proceeded by August. In addition, the BCCI said in October that it was exploring a five-team competition in March 2023. This league was formerly known as the WPL; however, the BCCI officially renamed it the Women's Premier League on January 25, 2023.
