IPL 2023 New Format and Regulations

The Indian Premier League has brought back the joy for all the fans and the viewers are excitedly waiting to watch their favorite matches exclusively on various channels. IPL 2023

  • This season is going to be the 16th season of the IPL tournament in which a total of 74 matches are pre-decided to take place. The first match is scheduled for March 31st, Friday this year.

IPL 2023 Format Explained

The IPL 2023 edition will follow the same structure as the last year, however the venues will alter. The IPL 2023 Home and Away Format in detail is explained below : 

  • The 10 teams participating are divided into two groups for the 16th season of IPL. A random draw is used to decide the groups as well as who will play opposite whom in the groups once or twice.
  • The 10 teams will play 14 matches each, facing the other 4 teams in their own group two times each(Home & Away) in the group stage. The 4 teams in the other group will once be faced & the remaining teams two times.

IPL 2023 Points Table Format

  • The team which wins a match is awarded with 2 Points in the game. 
  • No points will be awarded to the losing team.
  • In Draw/No Result both teams are awarded with 1 point each.

After the Group stage, a 4 game playoff stage following the Page playoff is followed. A total of 4 games will be played in the Playoffs.

  • Qualifier 1
  • This match is played between the teams ranked 1st and 2nd in the group stage.
  • Eliminator 
  • This match is played between the teams ranked 3rd and 4th in the group stage.
  • Qualifier 2
  • This match is played between the loser of the Qualifier 1 and the winner of the Eliminator round.
  • Final
  • This match is played between the winners of Qualifier 1 and Qualifier 2.

IPL 2023 New Regulations

For the IPL 2023 season the BCCI has introduced the Impact Player Rule to bring the chief change in the Indian Premier League History. The rest of last year’s rules will be followed the same way. 

The details regarding the IPL 2023 are followed:

  • For this season the team captains can walk in with 2 separated team sheets before handling their final Playing XI after the toss.
  • The teams can choose their best 11 following the toss, based on the result of the coin toss. But, until the last season, the captains were bound to change teams only before the toss.

Example - If team A wishes to bowl first but is pressed to bat first on a slow pitch with turning conditions, they have the option of choosing the playing 11 with an additional spinner and then swap a specialist bowler with a batsman in the second innings to aid in the run chase.

  • The new regulation was put in place by the BCCI to restrict the saying "win toss, win match" under certain circumstances.
  • Two Decision Review Systems (DRS) will be used in the 2023 IPL for each inning. In the IPL, players can review for wides and also no-balls.
  • Upon a catch dismissal, the next batsman will take on the strike whether the batsmen have passed or not, unless it's the final ball in the current over.
  • The squad that performs better in the league will be given the title of the winners if the Super Over or any Future Super Overs is unable to be completed due to any reason in the playoffs or the Championship game.

IPL Playing Conditions Updates

  • For each over that is not finished within the given timeframe, there is an over rate penalty of only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle.
  • A dead ball and five penalty runs will emerge from the wicketkeeper moving unjustly.
  • A fielder's unfair motion will land in a dead ball with five penalty runs.

Impact Player Rule IPL 2023

  • If there are less than 4 foreign players in the playing Eleven, the Impact Player must be an Indian player.
  • The only foreign player who can be utilized as an impact player is one of the four replacements listed on the squad sheet. There will never be a fifth foreign player on the pitch if a side introduces an international player as an Impact Player during a game.
  • At toss time, teams must choose 4 replacements in addition to the starting X1; but, only one of those replacements may be employed as an impact player.
  • The Impact Player will be nominated by the Captain.An Impact Player is not allowed to operate as a captain, as per the BCCI.
  • Each match permits the participation of one Impact Player for each team. But, it is not mandatory. Teams can decide whether or not to activate the Impact Player.
  • It is better to utilize the Impact Players can be used well prior to the start of an innings , following the fall of a wicket, following the end of an over, or following the dismissal of a batsman at any point in the overs.
  • Players who are replaced by Impact Players ("Replaced Players") are not permitted to take part in the rest of the game or come back as substitution fielders.
  • In the case that it becomes essential, an Impact Player may substitute a retired batter.
  • If a player is hurt while fielding in the middle of the innings, he isn't able to continue playing regardless of whether the team substitutes an impact player.
  • A backup fielder may only replace an injured player in the event of an injury to the impact player during play if the umpires are convinced.
  • The player leaving the field will be subject to penalty time for the batting and fielding teams in line with the regulations of the game.
