BCCI (Board of Council for Cricket in India) announced the player retention rules for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. This auction will probably occur in the 4th week of November this year. As per the new rule, all the 10 partaking franchises’ will be able to retain a maximum of 6 players from their last year’s team. Also, the Auction Money limit is increased to INR 120 Crores.

What are the Major Retention Rule Changes in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction?

Indian Cricket Organization made major changes in the Retention Rules for this year’s mega auditions. IPL 2025 Mega auction Major retention rule changes are:

• Each squad can keep up to six players (Using the Retention Card).
• Each team can retain a maximum of five Capped Players (Country or Foreign).
• Each team can keep a maximum of two Uncapped Players. 
• The auction money limit is extended to INR 120 Crores.
• A Salary board has been released for the retained players in IPL 2025 mega auditions.

Who will be reviewed as Uncapped?

The Indian Cricketers who have not yet played any International game or have a central contract with the BCCI in the past 5 years will be reviewed Uncapped. 

What is new is there in the Salary Board for the Retained Players?

In 2025 IPL’s mega auction’s retention rule which is scheduled to occur in November 2024 is that the squads can now keep 5 capped or Indian cricketers together with one uncapped player. The squads can only have a maximum of 2 Uncapped Players, the total number of retained players cannot surpass six.

Salary Board for Uncapped Retained Players

The Salary board for uncapped retained players is INR 4 Crores. The pay of retained cricketers will be debited from the total auction money limit (INR 120 Crores).

The Salary Board for the capped retained players:

• Retained Player One - INR 18 Crores
• Retained Player Two - INR 14 Crores
• Retained Player Three - INR 11 Crores
• Retained Player Four - INR 18 Crores
• Retained Player Five - INR 14 Crores

RTM (Right to Match) Card Update this Season

The RTM (Right to Match) Card permits the team to retain a player throughout the auction by matching the best bid. In it, the franchise can acquire the player on which a high bid is placed and no other team is paying that. In the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, if a team keeps 6 players, they cannot use the RTM card during the auction. 

If a team retains 6 players including 5 capped and 1 uncapped, they might have a limited amount left in their auction money limit, and they get no RTM card use permission. 

If a team retains 5 players including 4 capped and 1 uncapped, they have the RTM option to acquire a player who has played in the last edition for the same team. 

The change in the RTM card use in the IPL auction is that if a team uses the RTM card, they can now get the alternative to increase the bid and have to pay that much to win the player.
