Rishi Sunak is a famous British politician and at present , he is serving as a Prime Minister in the United Kingdom & the Leader of Conservative party from October,2022. He is a member of the Conservative party and became the MP(Member of Parliament) for Richmond(Yorks) in 2015. 

Sunak, before entering politics, worked in the finance industry, including Goldman Sachs and hedge fund the Children’s Investment Fund Management. He was then considered as the rising star of the Conservative party and was noticed because of his interviews and strong performances in the debates. He proved this right by being the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Rishi Sunak’s Early Life

He was born on May 12th, 1980, in Southampton, Hampshire to Southeast African-Born Hindu parents of Indian Punjabi Origin, Usha and Yashvir Sunak.

He did his schooling from Stroud School in Romsey and Winchester College. The latter was a boys’ independent boarding school where he became head boy.  At a curry house in Southampton, he worked as a waiter during his summer holidays.

Rishi Sunak’s Siblings

Sunak was the eldest among the three siblings. The other two are:

Sanjay(1982 born)- A psychologist by profession.

Raakhi Williams(1985 born)- Chief of Strategy and planning at the United Nations Global fund for education in emergencies.

Rishi Sunak’s College Life & Education

Throughout his graduation period, he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Lincoln College, Oxford. At this time, he took an internship at Conservative Campaign Headquarters and joined the Conservative Party.

In 2006, Rishi Sunak completed his post graduation with Master of Business Administration from Stanford University as a bright scholar. He met his better-half, Akshata Murty there who was a daughter of Indian Billionaire N.R.Narayana Murthy who owns Infosys company.

Rishi Sunak’s Family background

Sunak’s Paternal Grandfather was from Gujranwala, which is a part of Pakistan at present and his maternal grandfather was from Ludhiana, which is a part of India now. Both of these cities were a part of Punjab, British India.  

Later in the 1960s, his grandparents migrated to East Africa which was then the United Kingdom.                                                                                               

Yashvir Sunak, his father was born and brought up in present-day Kenya which was then the colony and protectorate of Kenya, as a general practitioner in the National Health Service.

Usha Sunak, his mother, was born in present-day Tanzania which was then Tanganyika. She was a Pharmacist and between 1995-2014, she owned the Sunak Pharmacy in Southampton. 

Rishi Sunak’s Business Career

2001-2004- An Analyst for the Investment Bank Goldman Sachs.

September, 2006- Became Partner of hedge fund and worked for its management firm the Children Investment Fund Management.

November, 200- He joined his former colleagues in California at a new hedge fund firm, Theleme Partners. This was launched in October, 2010 with 700 million dollars under management. 

Between 2013 and 2015- He worked as a director of investment firm Catamaran Ventures, owned by N.R.Narayan Murty of Infosys, who is an Indian Businessman as well as Father-in-Law of Sunak.

At both of the Hedge Funds, Patrick Degorce was the boss of Rishi Sunak.

Rishi Sunak’s Wife and Children

Saunak got married in Bengaluru, India to Akshata Murthy, the daughter of the owner of Infosys, N.R.Narayan Murty, an Indian businessman. He is blessed with two daughters, Krishna Sonak and Anoushka Sonak.

Rishi Sunak, Britain’s 57th Prime Minister, took his responsibilities at the age of 42. He is the first leader of his color.

Rishi Sunak’s Political Career

Member of Parliament

In 2010- Sunak joined the Conservative Party. 

In 2014- Selected initially as the conservative candidate for Richmond(Yorks).

In 2014- Became Head of the BME(Black and Minority Ethnic) Research unit of center-right think tank Policy Exchange.

In 2015- Elected as MP for the constituency at the 2015 general election(with majority of 19,550).

In 2015-2017- During the 2015-17 Parliament he was a member of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee.

In 2016- He supported Michael Gove in the Conservative Party Leadership election. She got eliminated in the second round of voting.

In 2017- He was re-elected at the general election with an increased majority of 23,108.

In 2019- He was re-elected in the general election with an increased majority of 27,210.

State Under-Secretary of the Parliament for Local Government (2018-2019)

Sunak was appointed as a junior ministerial position in May's second government as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government in the 2018 Cabinet reshuffle.  

He supported Boris Johnson and co-wrote an article with other two fellow MP’s to advocate for Johnson during the Campaign for 2019 Conservative Party Leadership election.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury(2019-2020)

On July 24, 2019, Sunak appointed Johnson as Chief Secretary to the Treasury, reporting to Chancellor Sajid Javid, following his appointment as Conservative leader and prime minister.

Chancellor of the Exchequer (2020-2022)

Sunak was promoted to chancellor after Javid had resigned that day following a meeting with Johnson in February, 2020. He became Chancellor as a part of the cabinet reshuffle undertaken by Boris Johnson.

Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister (2022 - Present Day)

Rishi Sunak was appointed as a Prime Minister of Britain by the Conservative members of parliament. He replaced the position of Truss who was the leader of Britain’s Conservative Party. He became PM of Britain after getting support of over 100 lawmakers of his party,

The PM of the UK is not selected straight through the common elections, instead the leaders of the parties choose the PM who holds the most seats in Parliament.

Before holding the position of PM of Britain he was selected as a Chancellor of the Exchequer from February 13th, 2020- July 5th, 2022. At present he is serving Britain as a Prime Minister.
