Shrawan Maas Story
There are more than many stories related to this holy time as per the Hindu ritual. All of these stories relate with Lord Shiva only. It can be said that this month is completely devoted to Him and his wife, Goddess Parvati.
- One story narrates about the Samundar Manthan, when lord Shiva drank the whole poison which had come out of the Ocean in order to save the world. Thus, Lord Shiva is also famous as Neelkantha. His devotees bring him fresh milk and Gangajal during this time to reduce the effect of that dangerous poison on Him.
- Another story related with Goddess Parvati, who fasted for the entire month in order to convince Lord Shiva to marry her. She was the reincarnation of Goddess Sati (The First Wife of Lord Shiva), and thus she succeeded in marrying the choice of person she wished to marry. Young, unmarried girls in India do Solah Somvar Fast or Mangala Gauri Fast to get the most suited husbands for them.
