Tirupati Temple 'Purified' Amid Row Over Animal Fat In Ghee For Laddoos

Tirupati Temple of Andra Pradesh is the talk of the town due to the use of Animal fat and impurified ingredients in its Prasadam. The created board is investigating all the factors of this matter. Meanwhile, a decision was taken by the government to conduct a Shanti Homam for the purification ritual of this temple.

Tirupati Temple Purified 2024

A purification ritual was conducted in the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams on 23rd September (Monday) in between the Tirupati Temple Impure Prasadam Case, in which ‘animal fat’ was found in the ghee used to prepare the laddoos.

N Chandrababu Naidu, bringing back the divinity of the temple, announced a Tirupati Temple purification ritual. On 23rd September (Monday), the ‘Shanti Homam’ Panchagavya Prokshana is scheduled at the Bangaru Bavi (A Golden Well) Yagashala in the temple. The CM stated:

"From 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., this ritual will be performed to undo the desecration." 

Shanti Homam - The Purification Ritual

The purification ritual performed to bring back the holiness of the temple, ‘Shanti Homam’ was conducted in the temple's kitchens where the laddoos were prepared using impure ghee.

Krishna Seshachala Deekshitulu, the Head Priest of the Tirupati Temple, stated:

"The state government came up with a proposal that what to do to purify the places of the temple. So, we went to the management with the proposal to perform a Shanti Homam. After approval, we decided last evening to perform it today after 6 am." 

He further added:

"After 6 am, we all went to sanctum sanctorum to take the blessings of and permission from Lord Venkateswara...Now everything has been purified, I request all devotees that they need not worry anymore. Come have the darshan of Lord Balaji and take the prasadam back home."

‘Srivari Laddu’ is the name given to the Tirupati Laddoo, the main offering at the temple for over 300 Years. It was important to conduct the Shanti Homam as impure ghee was used in its Prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Temple. 

Political View

N Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister, accused the previous YSR Congress (YSRCP) government of using inferior-quality ingredients and animals fast in making Tirupati Prasadam, Ladoo.

The YSRCP neglected Naidu’s allegation and stated that the TDP party CM would "stoop to any level for political gain".  Jagan Mohan Reddy, the YSRCP political leader, declined these allegations and wrote to PM Modi that no such violation was held when his party was ruling in the state. He called this allegation by Naidu false.

Where was the temple Ghee tested?

The temple Ghee was tested by the Gujarat-based National Dairy Board. This board has found elements of “foreign fat”. The NDDB CALF, on the 19th of September (Thursday), gave a report. In it, laboratory Animal feed, milk, and milk products were tested, and disclosed that the samples of Ghee used in the Prasadam making of Tirupati Temple, contained palm oil, fish oil, foreign fats, beef tallow, and Lard (Acquired by A Fatty Tissue of a Pig).
