Sudipto Sen's film "The Kerala Story" shows how some Kerala women were taken in by the Islamic State (IS) and driven into converting to Islam. The movie was released on May 5th, Friday, and has created many controversies around the nation. Many states put a ban on this movie.

Why is “The Kerala Story” a centre of controversy?

Right from its trailer release, this story has become the talk of the town as it is marketed by the audiences themselves who believe that the film is misinterpreting the Islamic culture and generating hatred for people against the Islam as a religion. The leading actor, Adah Sharma elaborates her viewpoint about the film in the following words:

“The film tells you about people misusing Islam for terrorism to join ISIS (militant groups) camps. So, whoever thinks that film is about Islam is wrong. “The Kerala Story” is not about religion but about terrorism, which doesn’t have a religion.” Several scenes of this movie, “The Kerala Story” have been called out to create a false narrative about the Muslim community and inflaming tensions between communities.

The mainstream critics have criticised the actors' performances and their "lack of nuance". They stated that:  "thoughts about Islam and [religious] conversion seem to have been sourced from hate-filled WhatsApp groups".
