• This rule basically allows the IPL franchise to select any 12th player in the game as a substitute to any one player from the Playing XI, and this player either fills the requirement of any bowler, batsman, fielder or wicketkeeper, specifically.
• The team in IPL submits the list of playing XI together with the names of a maximum 5 players as replacements.
• This player who is taken by the team as a substitute is known as the Impact player for the team. This rule was eventually taken from the Australian BBL(Big Bash League) & first implemented on the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

This rule can be applied throughout the game to the team. The impact player can be selected before:

• The start of the innings 
• once an over finished
• Just after the fall of wicket or when the batsman decides to dismiss 
• In between an Over.

• IPL 2023 inauguration was scheduled for March 31st of this year and the first match was between the title defenders Gujarat Titans and the four time title winners Chennai Super Kings. 
• Gujarat Titans has won the toss of this match and decided to bowl first and this leads to the first Batting of their opponent, the Chennai Super Kings Franchise.
• As they bat first they get to choose the impact player of the IPL tournament before anybody else.

• Gujarat Titans vs. Chennai Super Kings was the first match scheduled, same as the inaugural date for IPL 2023, March 31st Friday. This match took place by 07:30 Pm in the evening of the last day of March 2023.

• Deshpande entered before the GT innings started. The umpire of the match had given a special Welcome signal by crossing his hands to welcome Deshpande, as the first impact player of the IPL 2023. This gesture was as similar as made during the football matches for a substitution.

• Tushar Deshpande’s performance as the first impact player can be considered average as he only took one wicket in a total of 3.2 overs and has given 51 runs to the Gujarat Titans franchise. 
• The wicket taken by him was of Shubhman Gill, who made the second half-century in the IPL 2023 after Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings). This wicket was important but the expectation from Deshpande was much higher than this. Despite the fact that he contributed his best to the team, CSK lost this match against the GT franchise.
